Human and nature in watercolor with Ida and Kai Glad
Garden of Lemons, Melegís, Andalusia
9. – 16. april 2027
Price: from 10.600 kr. plus flight
price for a partner not joining the classes: 7.300 kr.
We are looking forward to welcoming you to our watercolour workshop. The two of us, Kai and Ida, teach our favourite subjects and methods. Kai teaches landscape painting and Ida teaches portrait painting, and of course we will also paint some of the beautiful botanical motifs to be found in the Garden of Lemons. This way, participants will cover several subjects during the six days.
Since there are two of us teaching, we have chosen to split participants into 2 groups on some days, while other days we will be together and the teaching will be shared between both of us. The course accomodates both Danish and English-speaking participants.
About the teachers
Kai Glad:
“I have been drawing and painting since childhood, and have worked with both acrylic and oil, but ten years ago, I began painting watercolors. I was captivated by the lightness and elegance that characterizes watercolor painting – it expresses very precisely what I have on my mind.
My subjects are typically landscapes, portraits and birds – a tribute to the beautiful nature that surrounds us. Wherever I go – along forest paths, by the shore, and across open countryside – I get inspired. I take photos and do small sketches on location, but the painting itself takes place back in my studio. “Painting brings me great joy. I become completely absorbed in the process, fully focused in my work, losing all sense of time and place.”
“Kai Glad is a remarkably recognized watercolor painter with a keen eye for light, atmosphere and the rhythm of nature. His works range from open landscapes and winter fields to harbour scenes, animals and birds – always with a lightness and technical confidence that shows many years of deep engagement with the medium. His watercolors
balance between the airy and the precise, the spontaneous and the controlled – and it is precisely this balance that he is able to pass on to the students. As a teacher, Kai is thorough, calm and present – with a rare ability to make complex techniques understandable and accessible.”
Ida Glad: “I have been drawing since childhood and began painting as a teenager, primarily with acrylics. I hold a Master’s degree in Social Psychology and Learning from Roskilde University and I am working with art as a tool for health, wellbeing and recovery at Skolen for Skabertrang.
I have taught visual arts for 10 years in public and private schools, in businesses, through private art studios and FOF. I am primarily a self-taught artist, but have continuously developed my practice through residencies at various art schools and courses. My father Kai is the reason I began exploring watercolor painting in 2019 – and now I am completely hooked.”
“Ida is such a kind and encouraging teacher. She creates a really calm and welcoming atmosphere, where it feels safe to explore and just enjoy painting. She is always so helpful and patient, and she has a very special way of explaining color theory, that suddenly makes it all make sense. She is also very good at showing how to enjoy the whole watercolour process, especially working with layers and letting the painting slowly build up. Painting with Ida feels inspiring and relaxed at the same time.”
About landscape painting with Kai:
Watercolor painting requires planning and patience – unlike acrylic and oil, you cannot paint over a mistake, so we have to work in a structured, step-by-step manner. You will learn about subject selection, composition, tonal values and color mixing, as well as the right materials such as paper, brushes and palette.
Starting from a pencil sketch, we build the painting up layer by layer, learning to paint sky, clouds, background, bushes, trees, buildings, light and shadow. Along the way you will be introduced to techniques such as wet-in-wet, wet-on-dry, dry brush, glazing, washing and splatter. Everyone is painting the same subject, each step is demonstrated, and you will receive individual guidance along the way.
About portrait painting with Ida:
Portrait painting is considered one of the most challenging subjects in watercolor – but in reality it comes down to understanding how a portrait is built up layer by layer, and having a concrete and easy method to work from.
We work with skin tones and with combinations of warm and cool colors, as well as understanding light, midtones, shadows and reflected light. We combine wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry techniques. I demonstrate each step of the portrait, and you can confidently follow the process at your own pace.
You choose whether to paint the same portrait as my demonstration or to paint a portrait of your own choice. In the latter case, please send me the reference photo in advance, so that I can approve it. Choose a subject with clear highlights and deep shadows.
Joint teaching with Kai and Ida – Free choice of subject
On the days with free choice of subject, Kai and Ida will be available for individual help and guidance and demonstrate various techniques for painting botanical motifs – fruits and flowers from Garden of Lemons, among other things. We focus on color mixing, light, shadow and tonal values, the mastery and use of wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry techniques, as well as other creative techniques.
The course takes place at the Garden of Lemons, a refuge for people seeking new experiences, tranquility, and deeper immersion in beautiful surroundings.
The place is stunning, sheltered by the Sierra Nevada mountain range between Granada and the Mediterranean, tucked away from the usual tourist routes, and green and lush year-round.
Being here is a sensory experience: each month has its own scents and colours, beginning with the almond trees in early spring
The food and meals at the Garden of Lemons are among the finest moments of a stay. We set the table beneath the old olive trees or in the garden orangery, and guests enjoy gathering to eat delightful dishes inspired by the season and by ingredients harvested from the large kitchen gardens.
The cuisine is characterized by delicious, refined dishes—mostly vegetarian—prepared using simple techniques in which aromas, flavours, colours, and varied textures create small, heavenly mouthfuls. We use fresh ingredients and make everything from scratch, generously using our own extra-virgin olive oil and seasoned salts, spices from world cuisines, lemons, and capers, which come together in the most wonderful bites that stimulate all the senses.
Henrik Vilain and Ingo Schauser have published five cookbooks: CITRONEN (LEMONS) and OLIVEN & OLIVENOLIE, released by Muusmanns Forlag, Copenhagen, in 2020 and 2021, AVOCADO, 2022, TOMATOES, 2023 and ONIONS, 2025.
All books have been translated into German and published in Germany by Jacoby & Stuart, which recently received the 2022 German Publishing Prize.
The course is for everyone, from beginners to experienced painters, who want to immerse themselves in the art of watercolor. Each participant gets their own table and parasol. We paint outdoors and indoors, depending on the weather.
It’s ideal to travel as a pair if only one of you paints — there are many other things to do besides painting.
